Cannes 2021 Lineup: Leos Carax, Asghar Farhadi, and More Compete for Palme d’Or

One day after the Cannes Film Festival announced that it would honor Jodie Foster with a lifetime achievement Palme d’Or, the festival unveiled the majority of its lineup, from the films that will compete for the Palme d’Or to those set to debut in Un Certain Regard, the Special and Midnight sections, and more. In addition to the previously announced films that will vie for the top prize, all originally slated to premiere at last year’s postponed edition of the festival (Leos Carax’s Annete, Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch, and Paul Verhoeven’s Benddetta), the lineup includes the latest from several big-name auteurs, and more than a few past Palme d’Or winners: Jacques Audiard (Les Olympiades), Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Memoria), Bruno Dumont (France), Asghar Farhadi (A Hero), and more.

The lineup, which consists of 24 competition titles, was unveiled by the festival’s artistic director and general delegate, Thierry Frémaux, and festival president Pierre Lescure. In 2019, the festival touted the “significant increase” in films from women, and while the trend continues this year, only four women will screen films in competition: Mia Hansen-Løve (Bergman Island), Catherine Corsini (La Fracture), Ildikó Enyedi (The Story of My Wife), and Julia Ducournau (Titane). The only question mark left after today’s announcement is which major blockbuster would screen on the beach and what film will close out the festival.
