The guessing game around which films could make the lineup for the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which runs from May 16—27, reliably ramped up in earnest after this year’s Berlinale. It’s a sport that trade publications and devoted cinephiles have become so good at playing that usually the only surprise about a Cannes lineup is which titles completely managed to evade people’s radars, as well as which sure bets failed to materialize.
In February, it was announced that Ruben Östlund would be presiding over this year’s jury, and that he would, per his words, remind his colleagues “about the social function of the cinema. A good movie relates to the collective experience, stimulates us to think and makes us want to discuss what we have seen.” Since then, it was announced that James Mangold’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon would have their world premieres at the festival, though the question remained if the latter would screen in competition. And today we have our answer to that and many other questions.
This year’s lineup, which consists of 19 competition titles, was unveiled earlier today by the festival’s artistic director, Thierry Frémaux. As previously announced, Maïwenn’s Jeanne du Barry, will open the festival on May 16 out of completion.
