Rumor has it that Wes Anderson’s latest, Asteroid City, is set to premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, before touching down a month later in U.S. theaters. But this much is true: Today we have gotten our first look at the film, which takes place in a fictional American desert town circa 1955. Written by Anderson from a story by himself and frequent collaborator Roman Coppola, the film is described by distributor Focus Features as follows:
The itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention (organized to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition) is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events.
Anderson, who’s currently in post-production on his adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar for Netflix, has amassed a cast of both familiar and new faces for Asteroid City, including Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie, Tony Revolori, and Jeff Goldblum. If Bill Murray is conspicuously missing from its cast, that’s because the actor, who was originally cast in the film, was replaced by Carrell after contracting Covid-19 shortly before production was scheduled to begin.

Focus Features will release Asteroid City in select theaters on June 16.
