Former Neutrogena spokesperson Mandy Moore transformed Rihanna’s “Umbrella” into a folk-pop standard on Yahoo! Music recently, and while there’s no accounting for how close that microphone is to her nostrils (or for the singer’s unnecessary disclaimer that she doesn’t listen to Top 40 music—yes, yes, we know Moore resents “Candy,” to which she and her band now give a similar stripped-down live treatment), her performance is both a testament to how well written a song “Umbrella” is and a reminder of how underrated a singer Moore is:
