A metafictional account of Annie Clark and Carrie Brownstein banding together to make a documentary about St. Vincent, The Nowhere Inn premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in the Midnight section back in 2020. IFC Films acquired the North American rights from Tropic Studios in March and today released a teaser for the genre-bending documentary, which is slated to open in theaters and on VOD on September 17. The announcement comes on the heels of the release of St. Vincent’s latest album, Daddy’s Home, which in many ways is also a hall-of-mirrors deconstruction of St. Vincent’s persona.
According to IFC’s official description, The Nowhere Inn follows real-life friends Clark and Bronstein as they set out to make “a documentary about St. Vincent’s music, touring life, and on-stage persona. But they quickly discover unpredictable forces lurking within subject and filmmaker that threaten to derail the friendship, the project, and the duo’s creative lives.” The film, written by and starring Clark and Brownstein, is the first feature directed by Bill Benz, whose past directing and producing credits include Portlandia and At Home with Amy Sedaris.
