Nominations for the 93nd Academy Awards were announced Monday morning by Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas. David Fincher’s Mank far and away led the nomination count with 10. Six of the remaining seven films up for best picture scored six nominations: The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Minari, Nomadland, Sound of Metal, and The Trial of the Chicago 7. Meanwhile, Promising Young Woman landed four nods, including one for Emerald Fennel in best director, alongside Chloé Zhao. This is the first time in Oscar history where two female directors are nominated in the same category.
Though Chadwick Boseman solidified his frontrunner status with a nomination for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, he didn’t score a second one for Da 5 Bloods in best supporting actor, where he had to make room for Lakeith Stanfield in Judas and the Black Messiah. Among the other surprises: Thomas Vinterberg landed a nomination for best director, pushing Aaron Sorkin out of the way and making Another Round the film to beat for best international feature; Mank missed for Jack Fincher’s screenplay; and more than a few documentary heavyweights failed to make the cut, among them Welcome to Chechnya.
