Richard LaGravenese’s film mostly skirts any connection to musical theater as though it were faintly embarrassed.
It asserts that one sublime performance is enough to make the whole toilsome collaborative process worth it.
Despite the standard-issue sap of its garden-variety plot, the film isn’t out to change your life or desperately steal your tears.
