Best Attempt At Turning AFI’s “100 Movies, 100 Years” Update Into Something Valuable: Matt Zoller Seitz, responding to a comment made to his Links for the Day blog entry for The House Next Door, states that he kind of likes the list “because it gives you a better sense of how collective taste shifts over time than the critics polls or the Guardian-style, ’Let’s see what the readers think’ polls” before allowing the conversation to shift into a discussion of the suckitude of Godard’s post-’60s cinematic output.
Most Convincing Defense Of Eli Roth’s Indefensible Hostel: Part II: Dennis Cozzalio’s intelligent, non-kneejerk critique of the film (not to mention his takedown of the term “torture porn”) for his blog Sergio Leone and the Infield Fly Rule. Cozzalio’s equitable praise is so compelling I’ll ignore forthe moment that I don’t think he’s ever seen a giallo film in his life.

Best Takedown Of Eli Roth’s Delusions Of Grandeur: Michael Koresky’s review of Hostel: Part II for Reverse Shot—the best piece of film writing you may read all year. Koresky gets everything right about what’s wrong with Eli Roth and the “cultural black hole” his movie represents. Few critics appreciate, let alone care to understand, the horror genre, past or present, but Koresky gets everything about what filmmakers like Roth are doing to film culture. Can’t wait to read Koresky’s thoughts on Trade, a “geopolitical-issue porn” that seems to have been ghost directed by Roth himself.
