The moment the teaser for Taylor Swift’s new music video for “…Ready for It?” dropped earlier this week, fans began dissecting the merely 15-second clip and spinning elaborate theories. Her nude bodysuit could be a response to Kanye West’s “Famous” video! The copious lightning featured in the video must be a reference to the artwork for ex-boyfriend Calvin Harris’s single “This Is What You Came For,” which Swift co-wrote under the pseudonym Nils Sjoberg (who, along with the Old Taylor, is now dead)!
According to director Joseph Kahn, who was at the helm of Swift’s “Bad Blood” and “Look What You Made Me Do” videos, “…Ready for It?” is an homage to sci-fi and anime—nods to Ghost in the Shell and Blade Runner abound—and he suggested the clip would inspire a “nerdgasm.” In the surprisingly uneventful video, a black-hooded Swift faces off with a cyborg version of herself before it’s revealed that she, too, isn’t real. “They’re burning all the witches,” reads graffiti scrawled on the side of the staircase where Swift stands, the flesh blown off her face.
