The reviews of Barack Obama's State of the Union Address are mixed.

Kristen Thompson wonders if 3D has already failed (parts one and two), and Walter Murch is certain that it will never work.

I haven't completely read the 3D articles yet, but I've wanted to get something off my chest for some time now about 3D in general. More often than not, whenever a movie I might be interested in is announced to be shot in 3D, my initial gut reaction is normally the same one Dave Chappelle has when his girlfriend tells him "we need to talk" (from before he was married). But then, I'll hear about how someone - like Murch or Roger Ebert - claims that 3D simply won't work, and I can't help but think of how often this type of thing has been said of practically any new technology, or in regards to film, how often a new technique is written off before some supposed genius takes it up and shows everyone that it can not only work but have artistic merit. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but didn't D.W. Griffith claim that you couldn't have action happening in a movie outside the frame, only to be eventually proven wrong by Yasujirou Ozu? And I think jump cuts were also something not highly thought of until Godard did "Breathless." It's somewhat complicated for me, because in many ways I keep hoping Hollywood can simply move past this 3D "fad," but the thing is, the longer it's around and the more it's utilized, the sooner some supposed genius can take it up and use it in a way no one else ever considered, and somehow take it beyond being a shallow gimmick with merely the illusion of depth. But if 3D really is here to stay (and it *sigh* probably is), then I wish some supposed genius would hurry the hell up and do it. Oh, and I should also note that I'm not a film critic whose job demands that they watch all the latest 3D movies. I can understand how that might sour someone to it.
