Shocking and terrible news, indeed. Jafar Panahi, one of our greatest filmmakers, gets jailed for six years and is banned from making films and leaving Iran for 20.

The Social Network expectedly tops indieWIRE's 2010 critics poll.

A little late but…Kanye West's latest also tops Pitchfork's list of the Top 50 Albums of 2010.

And the very smart writers over at The AV Club share their favorite television shows of the year.

Additional to the Panahi news: the filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof (director of the great "Iron Island" and two equally terrific features, "Head Wind" and "The White Meadows," that haven't come stateside) also received a prison sentence and restriction on his filmmaking. Petitions are reportedly going to be circulating, but as has been pointed out by a few colleagues, this is part of a much larger problem. Hopefully Panahi and Rasoulof's situation can shed light on the many Iranians who are also finding themselves silenced and some real pressure can be placed where it needs to be. What's happening is a great injustice across the board.
