The Oscar nominations were announced this morning by AMPAS president Sid Ganis and actress Salma Hayek. Just as unsurprising as Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep making the cut were the shock omissions. Among them: Dreamgirls scoring eight nominations, but not best director and picture; Brad Pitt failing to snag a nomination for Babel, which received seven nominations and is emerging as a frontrunner for the top prize; and Ryan Gosling pulling through and landing a best actor nomination for the little-film-that-could Half Nelson.
