If one experiences a slightly hollow feeling upon the completion of Deadwood's stellar third season, it's due, in part, to the fact that it wasn't meant to end this way.

Cast? I'm worried some developer is going to turn the set into a destination resort before they can shoot!

The television gods are rarely benevolent, but a Deadwood movie (or two) would be a feather in HBO's cap, jewel in their crown, cream cheese on their bagel...a damn wonderful gift to the beleaguered fan.

I've come to terms with The Sopranos blackout; I've never accepted Deadwood might be over.

I don't want two movies -- I want another full season.

Jim B. says Milch has plans for a second season of John. Since he's so intimately involved with his shows, rewriting, on the set every day, when would he have time for Deadwood?

Very good news. I recently came across this article, which makes it sound like Milch is still actively planning the films (e.g., lining up a co-writer). In addition to the cast, I'd think the other substantial threat is Milch getting too distracted by other projects.

Posted by Nomi on 2007-06-29 08:40:00 Just finished with Season 3 and, wanting more, I purchased Milch's book Deadwood: Stories of the Black Hills. I was not disappointed. Anyone wanting more insight into the show's relationship with history and the development of its characters from both Milch himself and from its talented actors should pick it up.

And there's an afterward about creating the planned two 2-hour movies to bring closure to the show. Interestingly Milch said the films would not follow the same 1 day per show formula used throughout the series, but would "deal differently with time."

So we definitely could get 2 hours centered around the Deadwood fire 2.5 years after Season 3 ends (Spring 1877).

I think could forego any future television in my life if I was assured those 4 hours of Deadwood.

The big obstacle is casting: the show had a gigantic regular ensemble, one of the biggest in the history of TV, and with each passing month it gets harder to schedule them all in the same place at the same time. Plus, the more these actors work, the more expensive their services become.

This is when Deadwood cemented itself in my mind as the greatest series ever on television.

How could a writer ever leave a tapestry as beautiful and complex as Al Swearengen?
Posted by sly on 2007-06-29 04:00:00 Keith, you are spot on in identifying the commentary by the Killer B's, Beaver, Bridges and Brown, as the highlight of this set. Not only does it accompany one of the third season's highlight episodes (A Two Headed Beast, wherein Dan and the Captain wage a battle for the ages), but it is full of the sort of easy comradery and hale fellowship that any fan of the series hopes would have been found every day on the set. The dudes are also damned sharp.

I do, however, miss an Ian McShane/Tim Olyphant commentary, for those were highlights of the previous DVD sets.

As regards the issue of the rumoured Deadwood movies, Milch seems to hold the door open to the idea, but one must wonder aloud whether it will only happen if something deadly befalls old John of Cincinatti.
