That's what a parole officer, Griff Marat (Cornel Wilde), tells a curvy, bottle-blond parolee, Jenny Marsh (Patricia Knight), at the start of the 1949 potboiler "Shockproof," and it's sound advice.

Thanks, Peter. I hesitated before writing this review, wondering if maybe I should find more nice things to say because it was a repertory title. But it's a honest assessment of why the movie's worth seeing, and who might be interested in seeing it. I'm glad I saw it, but in the ensuing days, after re-watching "Imitation of Life," "Written on the Wind," "Shock Corridor" and "The Naked Kiss" (had to haul out the laserdisc player for that one!) I didn't need any further convincing that "Shockproof" was of mainly developmental interest.
Posted by Matt Zoller Seitz on 2007-01-25 02:56:00 I read Matt's review via the "online group". While some feel that Matt slammed the film outright, I didn't feel particularly offended. I usually love the films of Sirk and Fuller. I have a vague memory of seeing Shockproof years ago. While Shockproof has elements of interest, it is more interesting as a step in the development of Fuller from writer to filmmaker, than as part of Sirk's career. Don't tell anybody, but as much as I like John Ford, I still am not convinced about the greatness of Donovan's Reef. An additional heresy: Nick Ray's Party Girl is another dull film by a director I usually like.
