Don't know where this message should go, but I guess here's as good a place as any. Is this the project you were alluding to a few weeks ago on Zach's board, Ed? Cool idea, I can't wait to see more of the choices.
Interesting though, that you disallow shorts, docs, and animation, and then turn around and induct a serial as the first film on the list. Not a complaint, just an observation. Surely both of the first two picks rank extremely high on my to-see list (though I'm holding out for a chance to see "Les Vampyres" projected, hopefully not in vain).
I've never ever had a sig before. |

don't think it's odd at all that "les vampires" made the cut. there is one film on the list that may be dropped because it was technically a tv movie but, then again, most of this great director's films were tv movies and didn't stop them from playing in america in countless festivals and retrospectives over the years. (how's that for suspense?)
hopefully we'll be seeing some commentary from people besides myself very soon. in the meantime, i'm glad that the feature is getting lots of hit, so everyone keep spreading the word...

I can't help myself from trying to guess the title you refer to: "Scenes From a Marriage" by Ingmar Bergman (another one I haven't seen).
I don't think it's odd that a serial made the cut either, just interesting to note. Certainly it would be a difficult task to find the exact place to draw a fixed line between so-called "stand-alone" and serial motion pictures. As I was thuddingly reminded of by watching "the Matrix Reloaded" last night.

I knew you would say "Scenes from a Marriage." Right continent, wrong director... |

I really can't resist. Fassbinder? (don't answer if you don't want to continue this silliness)

great idea. am looking forward to see how your selections turn out (*especially* your defense of "Showgirls"). will undoubtedly become a reliable and valuable resource.
will this transpire with prolonged suspence and in piecemeal, as with Berardinelli's Top 100? and, as i suspect, the selections have no intended order? |

funny you should mention berardinelli's list, seeing as part of the reason for doing this list was a "response" to his. we've picked 100 films already so, depending on how quickly the films are reviewed by the contributors, one film could technically be unravelled every couple of days, rather than once a week. (i'm actually looking to fill a few review spots, rumsey, so if you're interested in possibly contributing, let me know by e-mail.) |

| Awesome piece on "Texas Chainsaw Massacre"--I always liked the film but I may have to see it again just to absorb some of political subtext I've always been missing. |

| A note on Killer of Sheep. You will probably never see this film because it is ridiculously difficult to get. I just got to see it in my cinema class after my professor spent nearly $1000 on a "rented" copy from the Burnett Estate. To actually buy the film is around $2500. What a shame, because this film should be seen for its use of "real" actors and the restraint that Burnett used in showing poverty. |

Really enjoying the list so far. Lots of interesting choices.
For fun I went down the images on the side and tried to figure out what they're from. So far I've got (from bottom up):
1. McCabe and Mrs. Miller 2. ? 3. Satantango 4. Last Temptation of Christ 5. Les Vampires 6. High and Low 7. ? 8. ? 9. The Scarlet Empress 10. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 11. ? (Beauty and the Beast?) 12. Jeanne Dielman |

i had to replace one picture early on because the film was dropped from the list--another because i decided to use a different film from the same filmmaker. now i'm faced with the problem of not wanting to reveal too many of the choices via the film strip. and since it's unlikely that i'll host a contest using the strip (i was thinking of giving away some dvds to the person who can guess all the films), the one's you missed were: showgirls, heat, killer of sheep and portrait of a lady. |

Thanks for filling those in, Ed.
If you don't mind my asking, which movie was dropped from the list, and for what reason? |

Ed: Great feature ! Perhaps you can tell me whether there are plans to release Confessions of an Opium Eater and the Bava film on dvd? Also, will the list include a film by Lynch, Cronenberg, Polanski, Argento, Kubrick, Pasolini, Rossellini, and Bresson?

The Bava film is actually available on DVD (in two different editions no less). It'd be great if some studio released Confessions of an Opium Eater but I don't know if that will be happening soon without more people throwing their support behind it.
Now, I can't answer everyone's questions or people will be able to guess every film on the list. But, yes, several of the directors that you listed will have films on the list. |

| I'm very intrigued by the list so far, except I have one major problem: I don't know how to get a chance to see most of them! Not living in NY or LA, I'm restricted to DVD for seeing rarer films. Are a lot of these films still shown anywhere outside of film school? Are most of these availible on DVD? Anyway, I am enjoying this feature and wish I could actually see some of these "essentials." |
